The York County Industrial Development Authority (YCIDA), staffed by YCEA, is proud to announce the Yorktowne Hotel will serve as a hub of York County artists upon its re-opening.

Twelve pieces of art are being commissioned, fully funded through grants and local patrons of the arts. Features including glass, mural, weaving, quilt, acrylic, pastel, metal sculpture, found object sculpture, pencil, oil, and fiber will be displayed throughout the Hotel.

“The hotel has always been a community project,” said Jack Kay, chair of the YCIDA Board of Directors. “This is an incredible, and unique, opportunity to showcase our local talented and creative artists in a number of ways. We have a supportive and encouraging partner in the Tapestry Collection by Hilton, and are grateful to make the Yorktowne as locally beautiful as possible.”

All funds are being paid directly to the artists, and have been made possible through the Women’s Giving Circle, Cultural Alliance Community Impact Grant, C.S. Davidson, York Traditions Bank, as well as a handful of individual sponsors and local patrons of the arts.

The process to select artists began in 2018 with a Request for Proposal to local artists. Forty-eight local artists submitted 70 proposals, and through a long jury process and selection committee, these 12 artists with a unique and broad composition of mediums were chosen. We’re honored to feature local artists: Phyllis Koster, Robert Machovec, Marion Stephenson, Richard Hoff, Ophelia Chambliss, Gale Jamison, Carol Oldenburg, Susan McDaniel, Nicholas Ireys, Judeth Hawkins, Daniel Finch, and Rob Evans

“We couldn’t have done this without the guidance and support of the Cultural Alliance,” added Kay. “They helped create this program to utilize the creativity in York County, and ensure that the Yorktowne Hotel becomes a unique hub for showcasing our local artisans.”

Artists will be announced at a “Meet the Yorktowne Artists” open house on March 19 from 4-7 p.m. at Marketview Arts. All are welcome to attend, at no charge, to view past works of the artists commissioned, meet them in person, and view their ideas for our beloved hotel.
